Dubai surprises almost everyone who visits. It is bigger, faster and (often) friendlier than people expect, but it is also easy to waste a day chasing the wrong attractions. After running tours here for years, here is the list we send to friends arriving for the first time.
1. Stand on the 124th floor of Burj Khalifa at sunset
The view from At The Top is a real moment. Book a slot 45 minutes before sunset and you'll see the desert glow gold while the city below switches on, all in under an hour. Skip-the-line tickets are essential — daytime queues run an hour or more.
2. Do a real desert safari (not the one in the parking lot)
The best safaris drive 45-60 minutes outside the city to the Lahbab dunes. Look for operators with their own camp, BBQ buffet and live shows. Avoid quick-stop "dune bashing" tours that just spin around a tarmac road.
3. Take an abra across Dubai Creek
For 1 dirham (about 27 cents), you can cross the historic Creek on a wooden water taxi. It connects the gold and spice souks on the Deira side with the textile souk on Bur Dubai. This 60-second ride beats most paid attractions.
4. Watch the Dubai Fountain show — for free
The choreographed fountain in front of Burj Khalifa performs every 30 minutes after 6 pm. Stand on the bridge or grab a Lake Ride boat ticket to get up close. Don't pay for premium viewing — the free view from the boardwalk is great.
5. Try Karak chai at a Pakistani diner
For under 5 dirhams, ask any taxi driver for the nearest "Karak place". This sweet, cardamom-spiced tea is Dubai's true national drink. Try it with parathas at any 24-hour Ravi Restaurant branch.
6. Spend an evening at Global Village (Oct–Apr)
Pavilions from 90+ countries, street food from every continent, fireworks every weekend — and the entry ticket is around AED 22. Easily the best value evening in Dubai during the cooler months.
7. Walk through the old Bastakiya quarter
The wind-tower district in Bur Dubai is the oldest part of the city. Walk the narrow alleys, visit the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, and grab Emirati breakfast at the Arabian Tea House. Free, calm, and absolutely worth a morning.
Final tip
Get a transit-friendly hotel. Anywhere on the metro Red Line between Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates will save you a fortune on taxis. Combine that with our pre-booked tickets and a 5-day trip can comfortably fit all seven of the above.
